CAMEL and Steve Hackett dyed Japan in early summer 2016 with their fantastic progressive rock. A number of famous recordings have appeared all at once, but the decisive 4-disc set is now available. This work was recorded at the "May 22, 2016 Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall" performance. This is an audience set that includes a full recording of Hackett and CAMEL who appeared at “PROGRESSIVE ROCK FES 2016”. A Japanese Floyd tribute band also appeared as the opening act on the day, but this work is a 4-disc set with Hackett's full show on discs 1 and 2 and CAMEL's full show on discs 3 and 4. This week, the titles of both bands coming to Japan will be released all at once, so let's take a look at them here. [CAMEL]・May 18: Osaka・Namba Hatch “OSAKA 2016”・May 20: Tokyo・EX THEATER Roppongi “TOKYO 2016”★・May 21: Tokyo・EX THEATER Roppongi・May 22: Tokyo, Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall [This work]★ [STEVE HACKETT]・May 21: Kawasaki, Club Citta “KAWASAKI 2016”★・May 22: Tokyo, Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall [This work]★・May 23rd: Osaka/Namba Hatch "OSAKA 2016" (★marked is a work by the same recording artist as this work) Although the recording order of this work is reversed, for CAMEL who came to Japan first It was the last day of the 4th show, and for Hackett it was the 2nd show on Chunichi. The person who recorded such a festival was the same recording artist who recorded CAMEL's ``TOKYO 2016'' and Hackett's ``KAWASAKI 2016''. Of course, they used the same equipment, and it seems that they were recorded from almost the same "front third row" all three times. In other words, these three works are a trilogy that records the two bands' "Kanto solo performances" and "joint festivals" in the same environment. To be honest, both bands were thinking, ``Let's press either solo performances or festivals, whichever has better sound,'' but these three works are all ultra-high-quality records that are as good as any other. The most recent sound unique to the “front third row” is unaffected by the acoustics of the venue and is like a sound board, and if the clarity is also exceptional, the complete recording where the quality is unwavering even in the slightest is amazing. He is a master taper who has made many famous recordings of various bands in the Kanto area, but his collection is also outstanding. Furthermore, since there is a sense of unity that runs through the three works, there was no choice but to release them all on CD. The flood of lyrical prog rock depicted with such quality is overwhelming. The details of the performance will not be discussed here as they overlap with the individual performance titles of each band, but the major difference is the structure of the show. Since this day was a festival, both bands shortened their sets a little. Particularly significant cuts have been made to Hackett's six solo songs, ``Spectral Mornings,'' ``Every Day,'' ``The Wheel's Turning,'' ``Icarus Ascending,'' ``Star Of Sirius,'' and ``Ace Of Wands,'' and two GENESIS songs, ``Get'. "Em Out By Friday" and "The Musical Box" are omitted. CAMEL, on the other hand, did not have as many songs, but four songs were cut: "Preparation / Dunkirk," "Air Born," "Lunar Sea," and "Drafted." These songs can be enjoyed at the solo performances of "TOKYO 2016" and "KAWASAKI 2016," but the interesting thing about music is that it doesn't just mean "big is small." Since the set is shorter, the concentration on each song increases, and the flow is different than usual, which creates a sense of tension. On top of that, the sense of concentration is enhanced because the songs are “this one”. What's even more delicious is the atmosphere of the two giants standing side by side. “TOKYO 2016” and “KAWASAKI 2016” also have a sense of unity from the same recording artist, but the subtle sound nuances of the venue are different, and the audience present is also different. In this respect, this work has a continuous sense of unity as they share the same atmosphere. As expected, I wouldn't go so far as to say that there is a "spark of rivalry" since both bands are super veterans, but since the same audience continues to watch them, comparisons are inevitable. Both performers leave no stone unturned, and the 4-disc set is filled with solid performances. Even though the world is wide, there are probably no two recordings where the breathing of both giants is lined up so exquisitely. A night in which two famous bands, who are the leaders of lyrical progressive rock, lined up. Hackett, who summarizes his career, and CAMEL's miraculous return to Japan. This is a 4-disc set where these two intersect and reach their peak. Originally, I would like you to enjoy it as a trilogy together with "TOKYO 2016" and "KAWASAKI 2016", but it is a masterpiece that I can confidently recommend to those who want to "just choose one...". A night that could be called the pinnacle of the progressive rock paradise that emerged in Japan in 2016. Please enjoy it to the fullest.
