Mintzer has been active as a big band composer/arranger and has been leading his own big band since the early 1980s, while providing music for orchestras such as Buddy Rich, Thad Jones, and Art Blakey. He became widely known as a key member of Jaco Pastorius' Word of Mouth Big Band, which left Weather Report. In the 1990s, he also played an active role as a member of the Yellow Jackets. A small big band featuring Mintzer's Randy Brecker, Mark Gray, Chuck Loeb, Will Lee, Peter Erskine, Frankie Malab, and guest Joheim Kuhn will perform the music of Mintzer's hometown of New York. A live show in November 1983 at 7th Avenue South, and a February 1984 show at 7th Avenue South with Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Don Grolnick, Tom Barney, and Lenny White.・For the first time, a 2-disc set of the two live performances held at South was recorded directly from an ultra-realistic high-quality master recorded by the people involved as if they were listening to it on the spot! The live performance in 1983 has become a standard for big bands, now comparable to the Count Basie Orchestra, and has been picked up by amateur big bands around the world.Mintzer's sophisticated arrangements brought about a group of songs with unique harmonies. You can listen to it with an ensemble that shows off its true potential. Jaco's Word of Mouth, including the first song "Mr. Phone Bone," once again convinces us that Mintzer's contribution was significant.A wonderful ensemble with perfect arrangements down to the details, along with Mintzer, Randy, and Loeb. Their outstanding solos weave together like a kaleidoscope, and they fully demonstrate their ability to later win the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Ensemble. Also, Will Lee's uncharacteristic bass, which was somewhat reminiscent of Jaco, was hilarious...Next, Mintzer's signature song "Spiral" was played, and the graceful performance and above all the quality of the song, as well as Mintzer's extraordinaryness as a composer. Roll your tongue. Lastly, let's not forget that guest Joheim Kuhn generously shows off his amazing technique and vivid fingering on the piano, and Randy plays the trumpet with a majestic tone, and is also a top-notch saxophone player. They played a blues jam that featured Mintzer's aggressive ad-libs, Erskine's amazing drums, and each member's solos. This is a great performance that brings out all of Mintzer's good points! On the other hand, the 1984 live performance was a quintet, so you could listen to a tense performance centered on improvisation by Mintzer, Randy, Grolnick, Bernie, and White, who played the entire acoustic piano, and the manner of authentic 4-beat jazz. ``Bob Boy,'' which releases a suffocating heat in the air, and ``Spiral,'' which has Bernie's rare bass solo and is fun to listen to and compare with the precious 1983 song, are also known for making Jaco famous all at once. Similarly, from Mintzer's amazing solo performance to the battle between Mintzer and White in the second half, Charlie Parker's ``Donna Lee'' shows an amazing bebop performance, and the first half features a full-fledged jazz quintet performance. In the second half, the performance shifts to a fusion style, and in particular, the last song, "Sambosis," which incorporates a light and refreshing samba rhythm, is a masterpiece that you can't get enough of no matter how many times you listen to it. This 1984 live was in contrast to the 1983 live where the emphasis was on the ensemble, with Mintzer concentrating on playing as a single player, and Randy, who was also participating in the 1983 live, giving a blowjob. , Grolnick's serious piano swing, and Barney and White's enthusiastic playing make for a sharp and nice performance! It can be said that Mintzer is still relatively unknown here in Japan compared to his popularity and ability in his home country of the United States, and this is a must-have item that luxuriously combines two performances packed with overflowing talent!
