BLACK SABBATH's debut forever changed music history. The storyteller recordings of that era have been significantly upgraded! A new masterpiece has been born, featuring even the most unique and extremely rare songs. This work permanently preserves the "April 29, 1970 Lausanne Performance." It's the finest audience recording. 1970 was the era when the historic masterpieces "Black Sabbath" and "Paranoid" were released in succession. While we've archived as many masterpieces as possible, this work is significantly more important than other works. To explain the significance of this, let's first take a broader look at the activities of that time. 1969 January 3rd - August 16th: Europe #1 (44 shows) (August 22nd "The Rebel" session) August 26th: Workington performance (August 30th: Name changed from EARTH to "BLACK SABBATH") August 30th - November 1st: Europe #2 (15 shows) (November 10th "Evil Woman" session) November 11th - 16th: UK #1 (4 shows) ← *DUMFRIES 1969《November 17th + 18th: "Black Sabbath" sessions》・November 20th - December 26th: Europe #3 (9 performances) 1970・January 3rd - February 10th: UK #2 (9 performances)《February 13th "Black Sabbath" released》・February 13th - June 15th: Europe #4 (77 performances)←★here★《June 16th - 18th "Paranoid" production》・June 20th - October 26th: Europe #5 (50 performances)←※MONTREUX 1970 etc.・October 30th - November 27th: North America (30 performances)←※PORTLAND 1970・December 5th - 20th: Europe #6 (7 performances)←※COPENHAGEN 1970 The legendary recording has been unexpectedly upgraded for a long time. This is the BLACK SABBATH. What I want to focus on here is the production of "Paranoid" in June 1970. While most of the live albums I've introduced so far were released after "Paranoid," this Lausanne performance was the 42nd performance of "Europe #4," which preceded it. As of 2025, the only long-form live performances from this "pre-Paranoid" era are the legendary "Dumfries 1969" and this one. Moreover, this album isn't just old. In fact, this recording first appeared about 10 years ago, running about 40 minutes. It featured no rare songs and its merits were its "old" and "good sound." However, a master recording more than twice as long was later discovered. It turns out that a ton of extremely rare repertoire was actually performed during this period. The famous soundboard "Definitive Montreux 1970 (Zodiac 337)" was released four months after this album, but the set is completely different. Let's compare them and organize them here. Disc 1: SET 1 (5 songs + α) - Black Sabbath (side A) Behind The Wall Of Sleep / N.I.B. / Black Sabbath (★) - Black Sabbath (side B) Sleeping Village (★★) / Warning (★) Disc 2: SET 2 (3 songs) - Paranoid: Fairies Wear Boots / Walpurgis (War Pigs) - Cover: Blue Coat Man (★: Eddie Boyd) *Note: "★" indicates songs not heard on the mocking soundboard "DEFINITIVE MONTREUX 1970." In particular, "★★" indicates songs that this is the only live recording. This is the most important live album packed with ultra-rare songs...or so it seems. It's said that there were two performances on this day, "SET 1" and "SET 2," and this work was recorded on one and a half discs, respectively. (There seems to be a single-CD import version on the market, but please be aware that it is a poor record, as the pitch was significantly altered and the recordings were crammed onto one disc.) There's still no "Paranoid" or "Iron Man," and "War Pigs" is still in the "Walpurgis" stage, but even more importantly, this album features a generous selection of Black Sabbath tracks. You'll even get to hear the incredibly rare "Sleeping Village" and "Warning"! "Sleeping Village" is one of a kind. While a brief intro vocal performance was previously performed in 2005, here it's played in its entirety for about four minutes. It then flows straight into "Warning," just as it appears on the album. This is the second take of "Warning," following "Dumfries 1969," but this time it's a massive version clocking in at over 33 minutes, featuring solos and jams from each member. It's a must-listen, like an expanded B-side of their debut album. While Sabbath were known for their long jams in the '70s, like "Wicked World" and "Sabbra Cadabra," "Warning" was the band's original jam theme. The final track, "Blue Coat Man," is also a rare find. While "Dumfries 1969" originally thought to be an original song called "Blue Blooded Man," this album, with its clearly audible lyrics, reveals it to be an Eddie Boyd cover. This is another extremely rare track, with only two audio recordings remaining. The best overall sound of 1970. Because the content is so incredible, I forgot to mention something important. This release, conveying such a rare live performance, also boasts a superb sound. The direct, on-core feel lacks any sense of distance, and the vivid separation is immense. While the short master recording from 10 years ago was hailed as "the best audience recording of 1970," this release is even more refreshing and beautiful. Collectors often praise the album, saying things like "far better than a poorly made soundboard" and "the soundboard will make you run away barefoot," and this release is a perfect example of that. While the Lausanne recording alone is heartwarming, this release also includes additional bonus soundboard recordings. This is the BBC's famous program "John Peel Sessions," recorded in London on April 26, 1970, three days before the main program. This recording, titled "Ozzy's Basement Tapes," was officially released on "The Ozzman Cometh," but this is a different broadcast version. John Peel's narration and an interview with Iommi are also included, uncut and in its entirety. And with these bonus features, the sound quality of the Lausanne recording is truly impressive. It sounds just as good when compared to the official soundboard. Enjoy the ultra-rare "Sleeping Village," "Warning," and "Blue Coat Man" with the best sound of 1970, and even the historic "John Peel Sessions" are included in its entirety. This is the birth of a new masterpiece worthy of the name "Definitive." Again, please be careful not to mistake this for a short master full of cuts or a group of previously released discs that have been pitch-shifted and crammed onto one disc. This two-disc set is the only one that can be enjoyed with the correct pitch and the highest quality sound. Even among the many audience recordings from the 1970s, this is an absolute record that stands out in both value and quality. This is the finest audience recording of the "Lausanne Performance on April 29, 1970." This upgraded master, which greatly expanded the famous recording that was said to be "the best sound of 1970," makes its first appearance with the extremely rare "Sleeping Village," "Warning," and "Blue Coat Man." This is the only record of the full "Sleeping Village." Unlike previous releases where the pitch was significantly out of sync, this is the first and absolute best, featuring the complete recording of the legendary program "JOHN PEEL SESSIONS."
