BLACK SABBATH, featuring Tony Martin and Cozy Powell, made a triumphant return to their home country with "HEADLESS CROSS" on their 1989 UK tour, which started with the Birmingham show on August 31st and ended with the Bristol show on September 11th. 9 performances were held. The highlight was the two-day London performance at the traditional Hammersmith Odeon on September 9th and 10th. This work is a must-listen for SABBATH fans, which has been carefully remastered from the master tape and made into a disc of the first day, September 9th. The pattern of this show was released about 10 years ago as “NOW FEAR ARISE IN LONDON” (Langley-049). Of course, the excellent audience recording became popular among fans, and at the time when live sound sources were still scarce in 1989, it received strong support from enthusiasts as a "sound source comparable to the broadcast source of Manchester performances". After that, definitive items such as "HEADLESS IN VIENNA" appeared, and it was sold out and discontinued after 10 years, making it a difficult item to obtain these days. However, the sound source that contained the peak of the '89 UK tour is still one of the sound sources that fans want to listen to. Compared to the Sheffield performance, the sound image contains more of the atmosphere of the venue, and it fits perfectly with the sound of "HEADLESS CROSS" at the time, which was full of melodious and dreamy moods. Yet any listener will be surprised and delighted by the sound, which has an exceptionally clear outlook and a sense of separation that allows you to grasp Neil Murray's bass. From the opening song, “The Gates Of Hell,” the fans who packed into Hammersmith were in the mood to “can’t wait.” At the beginning of “Headless Cross”, the excitement of the scene where Cozy’s drums carve the intro with full of dignity is wonderful. Martin's vocals are in great condition, reminding us of his amazing performance on the American tour and his 1987 live performance with "ETERNAL IDOL." “Neon Knights”, where you can listen to a powerful performance by the band, is a great place to listen! In the following “Children Of The Sea” and “Die Young”, Martin shows off his singing skills that approach Ronnie, and the listener will be reminded of his ability. We have gained members who are not only capable of each other, but also have excellent cohesion, and Iommi's guitar work is continuing to improve. The speedy and thrilling solo in "When Death Calls" and the phrasing that depicts a magnificent worldview in "War Pigs" have an unparalleled dignity. “The Shining” and “Devil & Daughter”, which seem to condense the best of the band, can be said to be one of the best takes on the ’89 tour! In the second half of the live, a medley of “Iron Man”, “Children Of The Grave” and Ozzy era classics will be played. In this recording, the acoustics of the venue are utilized in an ideal manner, the riff of “Iron Man” is heavier, the intro of “Children Of The Grave” is even more majestic, and each song is brought out even more. The final suite of “Heaven And Hell” and “Paranoid” brings the venue and band together as one, completing a magnificent live picture scroll! The excitement of the venue and the tight performance of the band that can be seen in this recording are truly amazing. It is precisely because of the tradition and formality of "Hammersmith Odeon" that it makes both the audience and the band so excited!
