The original BLACK SABBATH was at its most ambitious and energetic from 1970 when they released "BLACK SABBATH" to 1971 when they released "MASTER OF REALITY". There are still only a few live recordings from that time, but this work "L.A. FORUM 1971" has a stable audience sound and will allow fans to enjoy the precious performances of that time. This recording was made on February 23, 1971, the second leg of the US tour that SABBATH made after the release of "PARANOID", and was recorded at the "L.A. Forum" in Inglewood, California, with a stable audience recording that is more than enough for a recording made 40 years ago. Since this live performance was a support performance for GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, the entire performance is short, about 50 minutes long, but from the opening "Paranoid" to the show-end "Fairies Wear Boots", the recording is well-balanced and cohesive. Furthermore, the powerful performance that is characteristic of the very early original SABBATH is overwhelming, and SABBATH enthusiasts will not be able to take their ears off the stage for a moment. The opening, where the band does a sound check amid the noise of the venue, is wrapped in an early '70s mood. When the emcee calls the band's name and the live performance begins, the venue is instantly excited. The band responds to the excitement by playing a high-tension performance from "Paranoid". The sound seems a little distant at the beginning, but from the middle of "Paranoid", the sound gets closer, and you can enjoy the live performance with a powerful sound suitable for dynamic performance. At that time, "N.I.B." starts with Iommi's guitar solo. When you think of "N.I.B.", you think of Geezer's bass solo. Fans who have a strong impression of this will find it surprising. Iommi also shows off a magnificent guitar solo in the middle. The highlight of this recording is the intense "War Pigs", which starts with an intro that sounds like metal bursting. The mood of the live performance is similar to that of "OLYMPIA 1970," a professional shot of a performance in Paris, France in December 1970, but the performance seems to have improved, and not only Ozzy's distinctive vocals, but also the sharp guitar and the rhythm of Geezer and Bill, which create a unique groove, all seem to have been ranked up from 1970. The following "Black Sabbath" has a two-minute intro centered on arpeggios played by Iommi. This is thought to be the prototype of the instrumental "Don't Start (Too Late)" that will be included in the later "SABOTAGE," and it is interesting to note that the image is slightly different from the intro heard in "Black Sabbath" from the 1980s onwards. The main part of the song is also interesting in that it has a straight ending with no four-beat kimono at the end. "Iron Man" is also extremely energetic with its rough performance unique to the early days. Bill Ward's drums are especially lively, and you can really feel how important his drums were in constructing the original SABBATH sound (there is a cut at 3:35 in the song due to a tape change). The highlight of the live performance is "Wicked World," which explodes in the second half. It is a song that is typical of them, with roots in jazz and blues, and Ozzy's eccentric singing is unforgettable once you hear it. In the middle of this song, Iommi's guitar solo is featured for about 5 minutes, and you can hear the jazzy and spontaneous solo that is also seen in the later "Haven And Hell." The impulsive performance of "Fairies Wear Boots," the last song of the set, is a tremendous performance that is worthy of concluding the live performance! The power and chaotic sound image that floats throughout the entire 50-minute live performance is an exceptional sound unique to this period of the original SABBATH. You can fully enjoy the live performance at that time, which has few confirmed audience recordings, with powerful sound and performance. In addition, this recording includes a bonus track from 1969, when Sabbath was still called Earth. This recording was also heard on MYTHOLOGY's "Pre-Black Sabbath," which was previously well-received as a gift title, but this is the only item that allows you to obtain all four tracks at once. "The Rebel," which has a pop and melodic melody that is unexpected for the sound of these four people, and "When I Came Down," a blues-based psychedelic rock that is typical of the late '60s, were both written by Norman Haines and have been clearly confirmed as demos from 1969. The fourth track, "Early One Morning Blues," has also been verified by overseas enthusiasts and is believed to be a recording from a live performance in Dumfries, Scotland in 1969. However, the third track, "Thomas James," is widely believed to be a fake by overseas fans, but this work places importance on the documentary aspect and deliberately leaves this take. The thrilling free jam-style instrumental that lasts over 8 minutes is interesting as a single take, and the modern jazz-like development with the trumpet exploding is also interesting. Please be aware that this take is likely a fake, and enjoy it as "one of the takes that appeared at the same time". The combination of the very early take among the existing audience sources and the demo sound source before it officially became SABBATH is definitely a must-listen for all BLACK SABBATH enthusiasts.
