The title of this work, "AROUND THE BEATLES", was recorded as a special episode of the TV program READY STEADY GO!. Although they had appeared on the program several times up until then, they had only performed miming and only a few songs at a time. However, this special episode was a proper live performance, even though it was pre-recorded, and it also featured unreleased songs ("SHOUT") and rare medleys, which set it apart from other recordings. The recording took place on April 19, 1964 at Wembley Park Studios in London with an audience, and it was broadcast in the UK on May 6, 1964 and in the US on November 15. The broadcast aired not only the Beatles, but also performances by other artists, and even a school play-like skit of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by members of the Beatles, making it a very idol-like treatment that is pleasing from a modern perspective. This work contains this special episode, "AROUND THE BEATLES". [NO OVERDUB VERSION] First, an explanation of the sound source. At that time, miming (lip-syncing) was the mainstream in TV programs, and even in performance scenes, the sound was often from a record. A live performance would require a microphone to be set up, and miming is less risky in order to avoid obstacles being reflected in front of the face, and to avoid accidents that are unique to live performances. However, although AROUND THE BEATLES is also miming, what makes it different from other programs is that the sound is not from a record. The sound used was newly recorded in advance for broadcast, and although it is not a live performance, it is a proper live performance. In other words, the performance was performed to the sound of a live performance in advance. The "NO OVERDUB VERSION" is the live version of the pre-recorded version. Therefore, it does not contain any cheers like those seen in the video, and although it is a live performance, it is rare in that it is purely musical and singing. [ALTERNATE SOURCE] The special program AROUND THE BEATLES has been released in various forms, even if only in fragments, due to the good sound quality and the rarity of the content. Even in recent years, it has been rebroadcast and partially remastered, and there are many different versions. Here is a different version. "Boys" was recorded with Ringo's vocals along with "I Wanna Be Your Man", but the latter was chosen because Ringo only had one song for balance, and it is a live take that was ultimately shelved. [MARRAY THE K INTERVIEW] Murray the K, a close friend who pushed the Beatles in the United States, visited AROUND THE BEATLES' rehearsal and interviewed the Beatles. Of course, the main focus here is not Murray the K's talking, but the rehearsal recordings that can be heard in the background. It is interesting to note that he played "You Can't Do That", which was not played in the actual performance, as he probably brought his instrument with him during the interview during the rehearsal. Perhaps it was a candidate for the set list on the day. [SOUNDTRACK with OVERDUB] This is the recording that was played at the venue on the day along with the pre-recorded live performance. Naturally, cheers are heard throughout the video, giving it a live-like finish. What's even more interesting is that not only the pre-recorded live take is included, but the microphones are also lightly turned on during the actual performance, and the real-time vocals singing along can be heard faintly. This is particularly noticeable in "Can't Buy Me Love," where Paul's vocals are double-tracked. [16mm FILM COMPLETE VERSION] Here is the explanation of the DVD. First, the 16mm film version, which is the complete recording and has the best image quality, is recorded. As I wrote at the beginning, this special program includes performers other than the Beatles, from the opening to the ending, and all of them are included in the complete recording. Because it is a black-and-white video, it is a video work that symbolizes the early Beatles. Dressed in suits, the members shout while shaking their mushroom cuts. . . The Beatles as the general public imagines them are here. The skits performed give the strange illusion that Julie is doing a comedy skit with the Drifters, but you can feel the atmosphere unique to this era when the transition from idol to artist had not yet been completely made. Still, I'm surprised that the members, especially John, were able to accept such an appearance. They must have "sold their souls to become famous." [COLOR VERSION] Over 120 years have passed since the Lumiere brothers invented the image in France, and the world of film has evolved from silent to talkies and then to color. Yasujiro Ozu, who saw "Gone with the Wind" on the battlefield, is said to have felt that the war could not be won against America, who made such films, when he saw the full-color images. The first color film in Japan was "Carmen Comes Home" starring Hideko Takamine in 1951. At that time, color film was still only available as an import, and as insurance in case of failure, the actors were asked to perform the same act twice, and the film was shot in black and white at the same time. As time went on, attempts were made to colorize black-and-white films using artificial coloring. Nowadays, not only movies such as "Casablanca" and "Roman Holiday" but even "Ultra Q" can be seen in color. This work contains a colorized version of AROUND THE BEATLES as a similar attempt. Mr. Claudel label has already attempted colorization of the 1966 Munich performance and the 1964 Melbourne performance, but it is still not as vivid as the original color film, and it cannot be denied that the technology is still in its infancy. However, in the sense that it has been colorized as much as possible with current AI technology, I hope you will enjoy it as one of the versions different from the original. This work contains a full color version and a video that can be compared with the original black and white video. There is a function that allows you to switch between these while watching, so please compare the effect. [LD VERSION] This is a recording from a laser disk that is currently out of print. It contains only the Beatles' performance parts, and the video has a different texture from the film version. There are no differences in the content, such as the camera angles, but it is included as one of the different versions. As recorded on the CD, there are two types of sound sources: a live version without overdubs recorded in advance for the program, and a version from the actual broadcast with cheers and other sounds added. In this LD version, you can choose either one and switch between them at any time. [ALTERNATE VERSION] "Roll Over Beethoven" was used as a promotional video. The black and white shades are vivid, and although it is only one song, it is probably the best in terms of image quality. "She Loves You" is a song that has been rebroadcast only once in recent years. The image quality is not particularly good, and the sound and image are slightly out of sync, but it has been recorded in the same state as when it was broadcast without any corrections. "Can't Buy Me Love" is also a song that has been rebroadcast only once in recent years. The image quality of this song is also vividly excellent, and it is difficult to choose between them compared to the previous "Roll Over Beethoven". Although Paul is the main vocalist in this song, for some reason the camera is switched around John, making it look as if John is singing. [AROUND THE BEATLES] This work records the 1964 TV special AROUND THE BEATLES from various angles. The audio sources include a live version without overdubs, an overdubbed original broadcast version, rehearsals, and other versions. The video also includes a 16mm film version, a colorized version based on that, an LD version with a different screen texture, and other versions such as rebroadcasts. In particular, the colorized version can be viewed in comparison with the conventional black and white video, and the LD version can be viewed by switching between the version with and without overdubs.
