The Beatles are still being explored more broadly and deeply in the 2020s. A masterpiece documentary depicting a part of their history is scheduled to be released. The protagonist of this film is not the four Beatles, but Brian Epstein. He is the manager who discovered the unknown John and Paul and brought the Beatles the biggest success in the world. Speaking of Brian's life, the biographical film "Midas Man" is scheduled to be released this year, but of course this film is different. This is the Japanese broadcast version of the documentary program "The Man Who Created The Beatles - Why Did Brian Epstein Die?" produced by the prestigious British BBC. The original Japanese version of this masterpiece documentary, which exudes elegance, was produced by BBC in 1998, but the Japanese version was broadcast in May 1999 as part of the educational program "ETV Culture Special" by a certain broadcasting corporation. This program was a special program that was broadcast experimentally for only one year from 1999. Although it often featured music, it was a special program that dealt with cultures from all over the world more broadly. The historical scope and themes were wide-ranging, from the ancient culture of Peru to the theory of evolution in professional baseball. The color of the program is also strongly reflected in this work. It is basically a documentary program produced by the BBC, and follows Brian Epstein's life chronologically from his birth to his death. Paul and people related to NEMS testify about the time, and deceased people such as Brian himself and John also appear in past interviews. Many of these comments have been translated into Japanese, which is very elegant and skillful. While making full use of both "Japanese subtitles" and "dubbing," the usage is also differentiated between "subtitles = archive of past comments" and "new comments for the program = dubbing." Paul makes comments both in the 1960s and in the 1990s, but these are also neatly separated. It seems like a small thing, but this is very effective. The modern (90s) comments leading the show are dubbed, making it very easy to see and the content is conveyed vividly, but on the other hand, the 60s mood is full of historical mood with the combination of black and white footage and subtitles. The vintage tone of the actual voice is also conveyed properly. Moreover, the theme of this work is rock music and the music business. The choice of Japanese words should not belittle youth culture, and conversely, pandering to them would be unnatural. They pay serious attention to historical facts, and yet exude the passion of young people. This kind of production and sense cannot be created overnight. It is because of a certain broadcasting association that has translated many overseas programs into Japanese and has continued to handle documentaries of all genres. The "educational program x rock" depicted with the elegance unique to BBC has been beautifully translated into Japanese. The genius manager who revolutionized the music business itself I've talked a lot about the outside, but the biggest point of this work is Brian's life itself. Although the title is "Why did they die?", it is not a suspense story that reveals the reason for their deaths, but a history of the Beatles from the manager's point of view. Starting from his childhood, when he was an outcast like any rock musician, it looks back on his fateful encounter with the Beatles, and his success stories such as their advance into London and their invasion of America. The film features members, George Martin, and even colleagues such as Alistair Taylor, Geoffrey Ellis, and Alan Livingstone looking back on those days, and even legendary management colleagues such as Simon Napier-Bell of THE YARDBIRDS and Robert Stigwood, who worked with BEE GEES/CREAM, appear (and black cook Ronnie Trimple is also a rare sight!?). Of course, it's not all glamorous. It also touches on Brian's suffering as a gay man, the truth behind the rumors about him and John, the failure over royalties for merchandise, the harsh 1966 world tour, and more (there is even a story about Brian being threatened by a right-wing group during his first visit to Japan). The film follows Brian as he gradually becomes exhausted and his gears go haywire, and the truth behind his death, which was speculated to be an accident or suicide, is revealed. The Beatles were not just a group of super-successful stars. Not only was their music innovative, but their activities and the business itself were all trial and error and innovation. This film depicts the life of a genius manager, but also the evolution of the music business itself. The scent of the 1960s is palpable, and expectations for the movie "Midas Man" are stirred up... No, this film itself is a great historical documentary masterpiece that boasts the same level of excitement as a major movie. Broadcast Date: 8th May 1999 1. Intro 2. Opening 3. In Liverpool 4.
