With the passing of Brian Wilson, much to our regret, "Pet Sounds" is once again garnering attention as a rare masterpiece. Even if you're not a Beach Boys fanatic, there's no doubt many people own at least one CD of this album. However, due to Brian's wishes, the album was only released in mono in 1966. With its first CD release in the late 1980s, demand for a stereo mix grew. After a contentious release, the 1997 "Pet Sounds Sessions" album finally achieved a stereo mix, but the middle section of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" was replaced by Brian's vocals instead of the original Mike Love. This meant that Mike's vocal track no longer existed. As with "I Get Around" and "Good Vibration," faithfully converting the mono mix to stereo was difficult. Even more disturbing was the strangeness of the singer change. Nevertheless, because this album continues to sell well, the stereo mix has been remade several times. However, each of these releases has been plagued by issues, such as Brian's vocals being released as a single track on "You Still Believe In Me," noise on both the same track and "Let's Go Away For Awhile," and the recent 50th anniversary edition, which featured a faint intro to "Wouldn't It Be Nice." However, the mix being released is a previously unreleased stereo mix that had been produced but shelved. The "Wouldn't It Be Nice" part has been returned to the microphone vocal, similar to the 2012 mono and stereo coupling CD, suggesting that this is a shelved stereo mix that was attempted after that release in an attempt to further upgrade the sound. There are no noticeable noises mentioned above, nor is there any unnatural beginning to the intro to "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and of course, Brian's "You Still Believe In Me" is double-tracked, just like the mono version. Even more noteworthy is the stereo sound of the dog barking and train passing after the album's finale, "Caroline, No." This was first attempted in the instrumental mix collection "PET SOUNDS SESSIONS," but only in instrumental form. This time, however, the stereo version, completed in 2010, is even more dramatic. Furthermore, because the project was abandoned before release, the flat transfer, lacking the final mastering process, is a significant point. Listening to this version, the level difference between it and the official "PET SOUNDS" stereo releases is clear. The rich, natural soundscape is breathtaking. Current stereo sounds drab against this sound. The natural, rich bass sound on the classic "God Only Knows" is also impressive. Disc 2 contains the original mono version, recorded from the American open-reel release. As is well known, the 1972 album "Carl and the Passions - So Tough" was released as a new album, bundled with "Pet Sounds." However, this reel-to-reel version, released instead of LP, is extremely rare. What's even more remarkable is its rich, mono-like sound quality. While the "Pet Sounds" versions have been released using cutting-edge technology in recent years, they've often sounded thin, suggesting a lack of compatibility with modern mastering techniques. This reel version, on the other hand, offers a mono-like sonic impact not found on recent mono CDs, and is incomparable to current CDs. The original 1966 release was in pseudo-stereo, even though it was on the same reel, making this CD release from a true mono recording all the more groundbreaking! This unreleased stereo mix delivers a rich, expansive sound throughout the album, while the reel-to-reel version allows you to easily experience the mono sound impact on CD. Enjoy the original mono sound that reflects Brian's design, or savor the incredible richness of the stereo sound to your heart's content. This album combines the best versions of each "PET SOUNDS" mix, which even the official versions could not achieve!
