The Beach Boys closed the 1980 Knebworth Festival. Like Zep the previous year, they were filmed and recorded. Even rehearsals were apparently recorded with the intention of releasing them. However, no live releases were ever made (again, like Zep), and their performances only became public in the 21st century. Both the live album and the video were released simultaneously, but the live footage has become a staple of Beach Boys footage in the DVD era. In 2012, the surviving original members reunited for a virtual live performance, and Carl Wilson's performance of "God Only Knows" was used to great effect from this footage. Even this classic live footage is now out of print. What's more, YouTube only offers versions uploaded in sections, or versions billed as remastered and HD but rendered in a state that's unbearable to watch, making it difficult to watch this classic in its entirety. So, here we present the version broadcast in Japan on New Year's Day 2007. Of course, the footage itself is the same as the original, and the broadcast features commentary by famous people at the beginning and end (though the final comment about the falsetto is a bit of a wry chuckle, as Brian and Mike are confused). That alone is entertaining. However, what's particularly noteworthy about this broadcast is the captions at the beginning of each song introducing each song. These are truly on-point, and for us Japanese, the resulting video is even more enjoyable than the original. Looking back at the footage, Dennis Wilson seemed to be intoxicated that night, and it seems he'd been drinking even more when he wasn't playing drums. This is evidenced by his hilarious expression of displeasure when he was harassing Mike Love during "Surfer Girl." Furthermore, during the middle of the show, when Dennis wasn't playing drums, support drummer Bobby Figueroa took over, and the performance immediately became more solid when he took over, a stark contrast to Dennis's often drunken, rushed drumming. When Dennis returned to drums later in the concert, his and the other band members' playing finally fell apart during "Rock and Roll Music." This incident likely prevented the live recording from seeing the light of day, and instead, a recording of the Independence Day concert in Washington two weeks later was released on VHS at the time. However, compared to the Washington compilation, which was heavily biased toward oldies, Knebworth's greatest appeal is its far more balanced selection of songs, and it even includes tracks from their latest album at the time, "KEEPIN' THE SUMMER ALIVE." The camera angles are stunning, with Al Jardine and Carl Wilson even looking directly into the camera, demonstrating their relaxed performance. This is the rare Japanese broadcast of this classic Beach Boys live performance. Although it was recorded in 2007, it's already 15 years old, and with the opening and closing commentaries that evoke nostalgia, this rare broadcast version is even more enjoyable than the original live recording, so be sure to watch it to the end. Again, the falsetto is Brian Wilson, not Mike Love (lol) Knebworth House, Knebworth, England 21st June 1980 PRO-SHOT Broadcast Date: 2nd January 2007★Broadcast from 3am on New Year's Day (74:49) 1.
