The Montreux Jazz Festival, the world's largest jazz festival, has been held since 1967. There is another logo in the bottom right corner of the image, hiding the original logo. Although there is some image shaking and rough editing, the master is from a relatively high-quality tape, and you can enjoy the best stage by Aretha Franklin and King Curtis' Kingpins. King's backing band, the Kingpins, also work for Aretha Franklin, with the same composition as at the Fillmore. King Curtis (T/A/S Sax), Cornell Dupree (Guitar), Jerry Jemmott (Bass), Truman Thomas (Organ), Bernard Purdie (Drums), Warren Smith (Percussion). Aretha at the peak of her career singing with a great lineup of backing band members. It's nice that they are recorded at the same time as the opening act, and when you watch it like this, it makes you think that great soul artists, like James Brown's JB's, always had great band members who were integrated on stage. King Curtis had an exclusive contract with Atlantic Records. It's safe to say that he was at the peak of his career and the best R&B sax player at this point. He had the best tenor sax (and singing voice), and he was backing Aretha. The Kingpins created powerful and innovative arrangements that flowed into new soul, incorporating rock elements such as Cornell Dupree's (he had an accident in 1972, but returned afterwards) intense guitar solos and riffs, and funk elements such as Bernard Purdie's (bandmaster since 1970) drums and Jerry Jemmott's complex syncopation and polyrhythms on the bass. If King Curtis, who discovered the unknown Donny Hathaway, was still alive (he recorded a solo on John Lennon's "Imagine" session in July 1971, and on August 14, while returning home carrying a new window air conditioner, he got into an argument with a drug addict in front of his New York apartment, was stabbed with a knife, and died at the hospital where he was taken), watching this Montreux video makes you feel that way, and it's quite moving. And Aretha's deep voice and easy piano playing in "Brand New Me" are such innocent scenes that you can't help but feel emotional, thinking that Aretha still doesn't know what will become of King. Still, the wonderfulness of being able to see the performance, so high-tension that you don't even notice that he's drooling, and so full of solitary soulfulness, on video makes it even more sad. The wonderfulness of the fainting scene in "Respect". Even songs by white people, such as "Natural Woman" and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," have the same message, and she sings them with a gospel feeling, proudly showing off her voice that has given black people hope and dreams. This is the peak of her career, but regardless of that time, Aretha has always sung sincerely and was a person who never compromised. There is no doubt that this soul music makes you feel that way.
