Neo-soul diva Angie Stone reaches new heights. Two legendary live performances from NSJ in 2002 and 2008 are recorded in 1080P HD quality on Blu-ray! In 1997, she signed with Arista and began working on her debut album, Black Diamond, which was released in September 1999. This album put Angie at the forefront of neo-soul in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Her R&B top 10 hit, "No More Rain (In This Cloud)," is a classic song that will remain in R&B history. In 2001, Clive Davis, who was the head of Arista, launched a new label, J Records, and she moved there, releasing her second album, Mahogany Soul, in 2001. The album is more artistic, with Raphael Saadiq, Warin Campbell, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Chucky Thompson, Swizz Beatz and others participating, and Angie's songwriting is excellent. It is highly regarded as neo-soul and Angie's own masterpiece, and it debuted at number 22 on the Billboard charts. In a 2001 interview with Billboard magazine, she talked about the production process: "I was playing and recording while dealing with my two-month-old baby. I was feeling self-pity due to postpartum depression. This album is the culmination of all that pain and gravy." Angie further described Mahogany Soul as "a well-balanced adult album with warmer, more heartfelt lyrics and a youthful, street sensibility." In an interview in 2018, Angie described "Mahogany Soul" as "a defining musical achievement, essentially my own work. It wasn't diluted with any help from anyone else. I had some help with the lyrics, but I started writing, someone added to it, and I either finished it or we finished it. But all the concepts and themes came from a very, very wounded young woman, and at the same time a very stubborn woman." North Sea Jazz Festival live in 2002. First, the title track of the second album, "Mahogany Soul," is sung solemnly like an introduction. In fact, it was not included on the album and was created specifically for the tour. Next is "What U Dyin' For," whose sound was created by Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest. And "Wish I Didn't Miss You," which topped the dance club charts, is a cool song based on the O'Jays' "Back Stabbers," and the live performance of Swiss Beats' beat adds soul to it, getting the crowd excited. Curtis Mayfield's "Making Of You" is also sung as an interlude on the album, but this is a long version of it that is a highlight. Multi-talented Ilan Tabib (who played guitar on the remix of Prince's "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold") participated in the songwriting of "Pissed Off," which has a cool guitar that is also comfortable, and "20 Dollars," which samples the riff of Al Green's "Simple Beautiful" in the studio, is cool to hear in the live version. "Easier Said Than Done" is a band sound, and it's soulful in its own way. "Mad Issue" sings, "You have to go back to where you were," and "Everyday," which includes Sade's "Sweetest Taboo," is a number from the first album "Black Diamond" and is a collaboration with D'Angelo. Angie introduces the band while featuring the members. The atmosphere is very warm, but the band then moves on to "Brotha," a collaboration between Raphael Saadiq and Angie. Angie's rap is also performed there. "ain't no party like Angie Stone party!" A Prince-like call and response also pops out. The arrangement, which is unique to the live performance and includes the phrase "Soul Insurance," is the best. Then, the band leaves the stage with the phrase "Wish I Didn't Miss You," singing the duet song with Music Soulchild, "The Ingredients Of Love," and the representative song "No More Rain (In This Cloud)." And then NSJ in 2008. The super danceable "Play Wit It" co-written with Patrice Rushen is included in the fourth album, "The Art of Love & War". And "I Wanna Thank Ya", which also features El DeBarge as a songwriter, is included in the third album, "Stone Love", which reached number one on the dance club charts. Angie raps Snoop Doggy Dogg. The first two songs have a live-like arrangement that will get your body moving. The snappy cutting of "Life Story" is by Michael Severson. He is a musician who should be better known. He plays "Bottles & Cans" from "Mahogany Soul", which was not played at NSJ in 2002. He plays a slightly older song, "Everyday", and here the D'Angelo-esque keyboard work is comfortable. Then Angie hums the phrase of "Brown Sugar", which is irresistible. Then they played "Easier Said Than Done", "Pissed Off", and a cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Making Of You", all songs from "Mahogany Soul". Then, the new single "Baby" from the number one adult R&B classic "The Art of Love & War" appeared. This song uses Curtis Mayfield's "Give Me Your Love (Love Song)" as the base, and the comfortable medium dancer live arrangement is wonderful. Then it led to "Sometimes", a song from "The Art of Love & War". All the members showed the slow-moving love of "I want to love, I want to hate, I attract, I say I love you, I want to pull away, sometimes" with singing and instruments, which made it universal, and the result was a long play. Then it flowed into a duet of Angie's "More Than A Woman" with the band's musical director Travis Sayles, and "Brotha" started with the lyrics "He's a king", and asked how many kings there are here? Angie, who encourages the men, is Queen. Then, she has the audience hold up their cell phones for an emotional performance of "No More Rain (In This Cloud)". Then, she plays the backing of The O'Jays' "Traitor's Theme", stops once, and plays "Wish I Didn't Miss You". In the second half, Angie and the others actually sing "Traitor's Theme", which is respectful and impressive.
