"MARK BOALS YEARS" Volume 1 & 2 is a chronological collection of 12 underground live performances from the time of Mark Boals, who was the lead vocalist of "Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force" for over a year from the summer of 1985 to September 1986, replacing Jeff Scott Soto who left the band. This rare live performance collection from the mid-80s when Mark was in the band was a must-have for fans, as he was a major driving force behind the creation of the classic album "Trilogy", and Yngwie himself generously praised him as the best vocalist of all time. "Volume 1" includes live recordings from Mark's first stage with Yngwie, "Day On The Green" held in Oakland on August 31 (along with other bands such as Scorpions, Ratt, Y&T, Metallica), as well as the opening shows for AC/DC's North American tour from September to November (each show lasted just under 50 minutes). The set includes the fixed songs I'll See The Light Tonight, On The Run Again, Far Beyond The Sun, Don't Let It End in the first half, and the long guitar solo incorporating Bach and "Fate" to Black Star in the second half, but the rest of the set includes Anguish And Fear, Caught In The Middle, Soldier Without Faith, and Disciples Of Hell, which are played on different days. Although the sound quality varies from show to show, there is not a single take that is so bad that it is impossible to listen to. Even the Oakland performance take on October 19th, which has the worst sound quality, captures Yngwie's bursting guitar and Mark's piercing vocals well, and is at a level that does not cause any problems when listening to it. The best sound quality is the Minneapolis performance on October 29th, followed by Knoxville on November 9th and Nashville on the 15th, which are almost at the same level. In the table, it seems that Minneapolis > Nashville ≧ Knoxville > Los Angeles ≧ Day On The Green > Oakland. However, as mentioned above, all six sound sources have a good sound quality that is sure to convince you of the master quality, and fans will surely be interested in listening to each take. Anyway, Yngwie's fierce and extremely fresh fast-playing solos that can be heard at each show are spectacular, and it is realistic to see that he receives a passionate reaction from the audience at every show, despite being the opening act. Due to space restrictions, I will not go into the details of each performance, but they are all very enjoyable. Starting with the 30-second drum solo that is always played after the end of Don't Let It End in Knoxville, they play Anguish and Fear on this day, but they don't get the riff right and have to count it back up, and in the opening solo of Disciples of Hell in Nashville, they insert a country-style solo into the fast playing, probably because it's Nashville. And above all, Mark Boals' vocals, mainly in the high range, are overwhelming from start to finish, and you can hear his performance with a great presence. After this tour, when they were starting to seriously work on the masterpiece "Trilogy", not only the band but also Yngwie himself was on an upward trend and was really on the upswing, so this is a very excellent collection of live performances.
