The popular radio show "Young Jockey" series "Prog Popularity Vote Top 20" is back. This is a special radio show that plays songs while announcing the popularity votes of listeners on the theme of "prog". Disc 1 is "Broadcast on June 3, 1978" and will announce the 20th to 10th place, and Disc 2 will be "Broadcast on June 4th" the next day and will announce the 9th to 1st place. The master used was carefully kept by a core maniac who air-checked this show at the time, and it is as fresh as if it was recorded yesterday. There is no way that this kind of sound source will be made official, but the quality of the FM sound source is good enough to be used officially. The first thing that jumps into your ears when you play it is the time signal. From here, you will feel like you have traveled back in time. The fun of this kind of radio album is the comments and song selection that are raw and reflect the era. In particular, this album is a listener vote, regardless of the DJ's preferences, so the "atmosphere of Japan in 1978" is vivid, and it is full of the pleasure of time travel. As you can see from the track list below, the top 20 is a lineup of masterpieces from the golden age of progressive rock. However, it is the songs that are a little out of touch that exude a sense of the times even more. Among the great progressive rock bands, musicians such as THE BEATLES (18th place), LED ZEPPELIN (14th place), BRIAN ENO (16th place), and DAVID BOWIE (8th place) appear. As for QUEEN (6th place), the DJ said with a wry smile, "I think it's rare to find someone who can say that this group is progressive rock!", but this is exactly what the sense of the times is. In addition to the listeners who thought "Prog should be like this!", it was the atmosphere of the time when prog was widely accepted by the general public who listened to it without being strictly bound to the genre, and just liked what they liked. Of course, the consciousness and sense of prog listeners is also interesting. For example, GENESIS is ranked 5th, and DJ says, "They've always been said to be less popular in Japan than in the UK and the US, but looking at the number of votes, I think they've taken over as the second mainstream of prog." Nowadays, they're always ranked within the top 5 in the US's ROLLING STONE magazine and the UK's PROG MAGAZINE magazine, and they've firmly established their position as one of the "big 5 bands" in every magazine feature, but at the time, they were just the "big 4 + 1". This subtle 1978 feeling can be seen everywhere. Furthermore, the atmosphere of the heyday of "postcard craftsmen" is revealed in the introduction to the UK at 11th place. The 20 songs are introduced in a packed airtime, so there is no fun in the introduction of the material, but there is a story about organized votes to put your favorite bands in the top spots. The episode where the program staff and the craftsmen read each other's intentions through postcards and engage in a battle is the funniest. This is a time machine album that instantly takes your room to 1978. Live albums with vivid audience recordings also convey a wonderful sense of realism, but when it comes to "exactly feeling the time as it was," nothing beats a radio album. That night in 1978, when I was listening to a program playing from the speakers in my room. A time machine that brings back the temperature I felt at that time and even the smell of the room. A magic that is impossible even with the best of modern science. [For reference] The bands that did not reach the top 20 are as follows. 21st place is Utopia, 22nd place is Jeff Beck, 23rd place is Golden Earring, 24th place is Aphrodite's Child, 25th place is tied with Styx and Supertramp, 27th place is White Noise, 28th place is Deep Purple, 29th place is PFM, and 30th place is Phil Manzanera.
