In 1979, Elton John achieved the feat of being the first "Western" rock artist to perform live in the Soviet Union. After the performance in the Soviet Union, which caused a big stir at the time, he went on a triumphant American tour in the fall, which was named "BACK IN THE U.S.S.A." The representative album of this tour is "BACK IN THE USSA TOUR: BOSTON 1979" released by UXBRIDGE, but an audience with the same shocking quality was discovered. It was recorded by the well-known Mike Millard. In fact, the fact that he was a big fan of Elton has been proven by the masterpieces released so far, such as "L.A. FORUM 1974: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES", "SAN DIEGO 1975: MIKE MILLARD ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES" and "ANAHEIM 1980: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES", but if that's the case, then the "BACK IN THE U.S.S.A." tour... Such a maniac's wish will come true this week. As expected, Millard recorded the tour. The tour was scheduled for 10 performances at the Universal Amphitheater in LA from late September to early October, and there was no way Millard wouldn't go there. In addition, this tour was performed with a simple lineup of only Elton on piano and Ray Cooper, so it was also talked about that instead of arenas and stadiums like Elton's previous tours, the number of performances was increased and theater-class venues were used instead. Millard recorded the day that was just the middle of the consecutive performances, but the Universal Amphitheater is an outdoor theater. Despite this, the weather was not good on the day, and Millard had a hard time setting up the recording. For example, there was a little microphone connection noise until the beginning of "Daniel", and finally, the sound became mono because it started to rain halfway through. Because of this, it cannot be denied that this time it was released on CD-R. However, in terms of the content of the live performance, it even felt like the rain had brought about a miracle. When it finally started to rain in the middle of the familiar R&B cover "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" on this tour, Elton, who was quick-witted, started singing "Singing In The Rain" ad-lib, and the venue was so excited that it seemed like it was going to explode. In the first place, the reaction to the live performance itself on this day was enthusiastic. In addition, the sound image is close, as is typical of Millard recordings. In terms of the freshness of the detailed sound, "BACK IN THE USSA TOUR: BOSTON 1979" wins, but in terms of the on sound image and excitement, this one wins by a landslide. On the contrary, in "Tonight", the sound of rain hitting the audience (which may be a disaster for Millard) is included. Ironically, this situation resulted in raising the tension of the audience who were probably soaked, which reached its peak in the call-and-response scenes in "Bennie And The Jets" and "I Saw Her Standing There". In front of the excitement, Elton said "I'm sorry about the unfortunate weather today" at the finale. I would like you to fully grasp the feeling of such exciting scenes with headphones, and it is a level that gives you goosebumps when you actually listen to it. Millard's face is in full swing, capturing the excitement of the hugely successful tour with an exquisite balance. A new standard from the 1979 "BACK IN THE U.S.S.A." tour is here!
