"MERCY FOR POUGHKEEPSIE," which we released a few years ago, was highly praised by enthusiasts around the world as a masterpiece from the United States in the fall of 1989, which was Dylan's first tour after the release of his comeback work "OH MERCY." Although it was an epoch-making tour in which he released a masterpiece like the one mentioned above and performed songs from the album live for the first time, the number of items was extremely small until now, and it was a time when high-quality audience recordings were awaited. That's why "MERCY FOR ~," which is rich in both content and sound quality, seems to have become an item long-awaited by enthusiasts. This is the first release from the 1989 tour since then, but in fact, this year was a year full of rare and extreme changes even in Dylan's long history of live performances. Originally, he spent the first half of 1989 recording "OH MERCY," and Dylan's live activities started late, which was unusual for him at this time. However, once the tour started, there were a series of changes. For some reason, there have been many items from the European tour from the end of May to June, but as soon as it became America from summer to autumn, there were few items, which was a long-standing dilemma in 1989. In addition, the changes have become extremely drastic since the summer tour, and it seems that there is no more interesting time to collect and listen to sound sources. The new band formed in 1988 with GE Smith at the center has now grown into a reliable presence that can meet any demand from Dylan, making it possible to make a phantasmagoric pattern... that may have been from the summer to the fall of 1989. The Atlanta performance on the 16th of 1989, which will be released this time, is also a tremendous set list. The first song is "Trouble", and it is not strange at all if some people are confused and ask "Which album is this song from? Is it a cover?" This is a song that was included in the 1981 album "SHOT OF LOVE". If you said, "Then I don't understand it even more!", you are not wrong (laughs). It's strange that Dylan plays such a cool number at the opening of a live show. However, the idea of slightly increasing the tempo of a blues number that was played loosely on the album and playing it in a rock style is quite impactful. "Trail Of Buffalo" is a cool but unknown opening that comes in from the beginning. It is a famous song for enthusiasts as an acoustic repertoire from the 1988 tour, but here it is played with a hard electric arrangement. This is also very impactful, and this is the only day that such an electric arrangement was applied. The atmosphere is completely different from the version played in Europe a few months ago. And the final song is "Queen Jane Approximately". It is no exaggeration to say that this is a dream set list for Dylan enthusiasts around the world. It was the 1989 tour where such extremely rare repertoire was played calmly from the beginning. Furthermore, as you can see from listening to "Just Like A Woman", Dylan's condition was full throttle. The chemistry between the rugged performance of the group led by GE Smith and Dylan's hard work is spectacular. It's easy to understand that this day was a particularly outstanding day on the stage in the summer of 1989 if you listen to this recording. The sound quality of the audience recording on this day is also superb. The clarity is outstanding, and the freshness is amazing, as if it was recorded in 2016. And yet, if you can hear Dylan and the band playing in top form, there is no better debut sound source for CD. Dylan also skipped the second half of the live. I thought he would change the atmosphere from the usual "Silvio" to a slow ballad, but he was actually a cover of Van Morrison's "One Irish Rover". This song was included in Morrison's 1986 album "NO GURU, NO METHOD, NO TEACHER", but it was also a repertoire that Dylan liked to sing throughout 1989. However, the audience on the day, who were expecting a normal Dylan concert without any prior knowledge, were probably left thinking "???". The Atlanta concert was recorded with the best performance and the best sound quality on such an amazing set list, but the second disc contains the first six songs from the Inglewood concert two weeks later as bonus tracks, and they don't overlap at all with Atlanta. Moreover, the opening was a time when a novel pattern of starting with an instrumental was introduced. This is a surprising composition that not only does the song not overlap, but it sounds like a completely different concert. Can it usually change this much in two weeks? The sound quality of the audience recording is rounded and analog-like, unlike Atlanta, and the sound image is closer to the on state than Atlanta. If you compare it with the main Atlanta version, you can see how varied and free Dylan and his band were performing in the summer of 1989. With the release of his confident work "OH MERCY" just around the corner, this superb recording of the most aggressive live performance has finally been released.
